Lizzy Duty cutting ribbon at playground opening

When Lizzy Duty heard that Lytle ISD was developing a bond package for school improvements, she knew exactly what needed attention: the playground at Lytle Elementary School.

Then a third-grade student, Lizzy wrote a letter to Superintendent Dr. Dustin Breithaupt explaining the need for upgraded playground equipment. Two years later, Lizzy stood before classmates, district leaders, campus administrators, architects, contractors, and city leaders to cut the ribbon and officially open the playground she had imagined.

The ribbon cutting was held this morning at Lytle Elementary School, where Lizzy’s fellow fifth graders gathered to celebrate the opening of the new facility. The timing gives the fifth-grade class three weeks to enjoy the new playground before the school year ends and they transition to Lytle Junior High.

The playground is one of the projects included in the $20.6 million bond approved by the Lytle ISD community in May 2024. The bond package also includes 16 additional classroom spaces, a new gym and a new parking area at Lytle Primary School, as well as improvements and additions to the District Transportation Center.

Lizzy’s letter serves as a reminder that student voices matter at Lytle ISD and help shape the future of our schools.
