Junior High Basketball all teams 7th and 8th grade

Thank you, Junior High Boys Basketball Coaches for sharing your teams' results!

Seventh Grade:

Last week, the Junior High Pirates played host to the Cotulla Cowboys in what would turn into the boy's gutsiest performance of the season thus far! Your Pirates got off to their hottest start of the year with an impressive 10-0 run to start the game. This was led by multiple steals on the defensive end from Jazziah Brooks, Aiden Lugo, & Noah Aguinaga! These defensive takeaways would lead to easy points on the other end of the court from our leading scorer Chase Burley! Not only was Chase our leading scorer, but like he has all season, he found ways to share the ball around and get his teammates involved in the scoring as well.

Up 10-2 going into the second half, the Cowboys would not go down without a fight! As their defense stiffened up our lead began to dwindle. Up 12-11, and heading into the final two minutes, the Pirates were now clinging to a 1-point lead, while attempting to hold off this ferocious comeback from Cotulla! As time was closing in towards the buzzer, the game became more physical as players were diving for every loose ball, as this game was most likely coming down to whoever had the final possession!

In the end, the Pirates managed one final stop and with just 6.4 seconds left, they were able to successfully hold off the Cowboys to close out the game and secure another home win! These young men have definitely come a long way since our opener and their effort and enthusiasm for competition never fails to show up on gameday!

The boys will make one final home stand here this Thursday with their final game of the season (01/30/25) in a week 1 rematch vs the Hondo Owls! Hope to see you there to help the boys close out a very fun season! (Game begins at 5PM)

Eighth Grade:

Your 8th grade boys were back in action last night against Cotulla here at home. The boys were determined to continue their winning streak and it definitely showed. The boys came out slow and struggled to make some easy lay ups. The first quarter ended with a score of 7-4, Lytle. However, the boys decided to wake up in the second quarter and never looked back. Our press was too much for Cotulla to handle and we outscored the opponent 19-5 in the second. The boys never looked back and finished the game strong with a final score of 49-14. If you see these young men in the hallways, be sure to congratulate them on a great win. Below are the leading scores from the game:

  • Clayton Jopling- 19 points

  • Cristain Cortinas- 9 points

  • Davaun Reed- 8 points

  • Jacob Cantu- 7 points

  • Xzander Flores- 2 points

  • Julio Salazar- 2 points

  • Elliot Mata- 2 points

We will be back in action here in Lytle next Thursday against Hondo(who beat us by 3 in our first meeting) for our last game of the season. Then we will be in Poteet on 02/01 for our district tournament. Thanks for all you do for our student athletes and every other student in the school.

Thanks

Clayton Jopling and Junior High Basketball Coaches
