Eighth Grade Boys Basketball Results from Hondo game

Thank you, Coach Clayton Jopling for sharing these winning results from our eighth grade boys' first basketball game of the season!

Hello, Pirate Nation,

Last night our 8th grade boys' basketball team traveled down to Hondo to take on the Owls. It was our first game of the season, and the boys were eager to get back to competing with athletes from a different school. Last week were mainly try-outs so we had about 4 days of actual practice but that did not stop this group of young men to go out and compete.

8th B-Team:

Our B-team boys came out a little sluggish and went down 9-0 early in the first half, however, they were able to score 6 unanswered points and cut into the lead going into half-time. They boys finally got warmed up and started firing on all cylinders in the 2nd half. With great hustle and flying up and down the court, they were able to score 15 points. Unfortunately, time wasn't in our favor, and we ended coming up short. Proud of the effort the boys put into the final buzzer.

34-21 Hondo

  • Jaden Rios-6 Points

  • Julio Salazar- 5 Points

  • Weston Cook- 8 Points

  • Slade Whitley- 2 Points

8th A-Team:

Our A-team knew coming into this game that Hondo was going to bring it because they always do in every sport, we play them. They were up for the challenge and went toe-to- toe with Hondo every play of the game. This was a high intensity ball game, and both teams were firing back and forth. Our boys' rust really showed in the first half with sloppy ball handling which resulted in turnovers, however, going into half time your Pirates were down 17-14. The 2nd half was much better for us as we settled down and took care of the ball which helped us take the lead in the 4th quarter. Turnovers and lack of effort on the defensive side of the ball hurt us down the stretch, not to mention going 6 out of 19 from the free throw line. Our boys fell short to the Hondo Owls.

33-30 Hondo

  • Xzander Flores-4 Points

  • Stephan Perez- 9 Points

  • Clayton Jopling-10 Points

  • Jacob Cantu- 7 Points

If you see these young student-athletes before the end of the day, please congratulate them on a hard-fought effort. We will be back in action at home on 12/04, hope to see you out there. Have a great Thanksgiving break and stay safe.

Go Pirates

Thanks,
