Trade and Industrial Education Class Small House Project

Thank you to High School Trade and Industrial Education Teacher Mr. Tim Glover for sharing the impressive details of what's happening with your students constructing the small house project.

Here is a progress report on the small house the kids are building. They have finished welding the metal skid with clips to hold the sub floor. The skid was built with 6” I-beam and connected with 3” pipe in the middle. The clips are 3/16” plate with two holes drilled for lag bolts. We started the sub-floor yesterday and have most of the framing completed. The kids used 2x6 material spaced at 12” OC. The floor will be ¾” tongue and groove plywood staggered to increase strength. Attached are some pictures and a video of the progress they have made so far.

Some of the skills learned and used so far with this project include:

  • Using Autocad software to design and plan every component of the structure

  • Developing the materials list and cost estimates for the project

  • Using Job orders to organize the work, identify various roles, track purchases and costs and identify safety hazards

  • Experience with welding in the construction process

  • Experience with framing and fabrication

  • Application of knowledge

  • Understanding the importance of a 12” on center framing process

  • Understanding how to square corners using a 3,4 5 and 6, 8, 10 method

  • Using diagonal measurements to check for square

  • Understanding the importance of accurate measuring skills (We only bought the materials needed and did not purchase extra to account for inaccurate measurements)

  • Applying the use of hand tools and power tools associated with construction

  • Continuing to focus on safety, problem solving, teamwork, work ethic and responsibility

Still to come: Wall framing, building trusses, installing windows and door, roofing, electrical with smart home features, insulation, drywall, flooring, finish work and security system.

This is an awesome project for our students and will provide them with so many skills that will last a lifetime and can be used on the construction job site. I really appreciate everyone’s support and interest in the construction program. The kids are doing fantastic work.
