The Lytle Pirate XC team traveled to Corpus Christi to participate in the Region IV-3A XC Championships on Tuesday, 22Oct24, in hopes of finishing as a top 4 team or as a top 10 individual not included in the top 4 teams.
The girls came in the highest ranked they have ever been, unfortunately it came at the wrong time. The week after district we lost our #1 (Frances Scotello), #5 (Addison Wagner) and our #3 (Elyse Cortinas) was hurting but she still tried to go to have a full five and try to still qualify as a team. Though I still felt we had enough to get us there, we just didn't respond well and couldn't overcome our injuries and finished 7th. I was proud of the season they had, just a little disappointed that we didn't get to finish the season healthy and see what they could have done. I especially feel for Frances Scotello who was having such a great season and didn't get to see it all the way through. But what she did do was have a big impact on Svetlana Lopez who pushed through and tried to do her part finishing 12th after finishing 34th last year. That effort was enough to put Svetlana on the REGION IV-3A ALL REGION TEAM and qualify her for the STATE XC MEET. This after I had given her an ultimatum her freshman year for not giving much effort and asked her if this was REALLY something that she wanted to do. I am so proud of how she responded after that because I have seen a lot of athletes just give up after an ultimatum like that, but she overcame and now gets to compete against some of the state's best! So, so proud of Svetlana Lopez!
The varsity boys took the REGION IV-3A TITLE for the 3rd CONSECUTIVE YEAR and 5th time in LAST 6 YEARS. They had 2 finish in the top 10 (3rd Johnny Alvarez, 10th Lucas Salazar) and 2 others finish in the top 15 (14th Bryan Montes-Rodriguez and 15th Diego Reyna) to finish in the REGION IV-3A ALL-REGION TEAM.
The team is now getting ready to compete in the
UIL 3A State XC Championships to be held on November 2, 2024 for the 7th consecutive year
They are going in as the 3rd ranked team in the state and hope that maybe we can do better than that, but it will take a lot better effort than what we gave at regionals if we want to be on the top of the stand.
