High school softball team

Mikailah Mejia drove in 4 runs on 3 hits to lead varsity softball past Natalia 9-6 on March 17. Mejia tripled in the second inning, scoring 2 runs, and singled in the seventh inning, scoring 2.

With 2 runners on and 2 outs, Natalia hit a hard ground ball to centerfield scoring 1. As the second runner was advancing home centerfielder, Kaycee Galindo, threw home to catcher, Anissa Perez, who tagged the runner out to end the inning. 

Lytle took the lead in the top of the second. Mejia tripled, scoring 2 runs, to give the Pirates the lead, 2-1.

The Pirates extended their lead in the third with hits from Avary Hernandez, Claire Canales, and Payton Devaney. 

Headed into the last inning, Lytle led 5-3. 

The inning got started with a single from Evelyn Quintana. Devaney singled to right field loading the bases. Galindo hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring 1 as Autumn Foster doubled on a fly to right field also scoring 1. Mejia singled scoring another run for the Pirates, extending their lead 9-3.

Natalia made a run for the lead in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to get past the Pirates.  Final score was 9-6.

Canales earned the win for Lytle. The right-handed pitcher gave up 7 hits and 6 runs (1 earned) over seven innings, striking out 4 and walking 2. Lytle tallied 14 hits in the game. Mejia and Hernandez each collected 3 hits for the Pirates. Devaney and Quintana each collected multiple hits for Lytle.

Next Up
The Pirates travel to Cotulla on March 20 to take on the Cowgirls.
