Girls Cross Country

The Lytle Pirate XC team traveled to Corpus Christi for the Islander Splash Sept. 12, which is a preview of the Regional Meet.

Most of the schools that are in contention for one of the four spots that qualify for State were there.

Varsity Boys started the morning running in the Gold Division. We were missing our #3 runner Nathan Garza, but even without him the boys battled to a 9th place finish in the field of 37 5A/6A schools. Jacob Cantu had his best outing in a very tough field, avenging a lot of his losses with a Personal Record of 15:54.13. He put himself in contention early and stayed engaged throughout the race to help lead the team against some tough squads from the Valley and San Antonio area. Adrian Reyna just missed out on being in the top 25 with Sebastian, Jaden (battling an illness) and Shawn helping the team to a 9th place finish. This group is getting a lot of experience and learning a lot of valuable lessons that will help us down the road.

I was very, very proud of our Varsity Girls who finished 10th out of 37 schools. They ran the best they have all year with everyone one of them setting season bests on a course we typically have difficulty with the first time we go there in the season. Their performances show them that they have an opportunity to make it back to State (and try to and make it 5 of the last 6 years) if we can just get a little better and we have 6 weeks to do it. Both Annalise and Elyse set Personal Records and finished in the top 25 in a very tough field of 4A and 3A runners. Addison Wagner had the biggest improvement as she ran a great race coming in 3rd on the team and getting back to where she left off last season. Kaycee Galindo also had a great race and is making big strides after sitting out at the beginning of the season with an injury. Sophia and Haleigh continue to improve every week, which keeps us motivated and excited about what we can accomplish.

For the JV girls, we only had one participant in Hailey Montes. She was really tested this week by a couple of Valley girls as it was the first time she didn't win the JV division but still came in 3rd.

For the JV Boys, we were down to 3 participants as we have a few athletes trying to manage their injuries. Frank Cantu followed his brothers lead in the 3A/4A Division as he ran a Personal Best and finished 17th to help him get ready to join the Varsity this Saturday at the HOKA McNeil meet, site of the State meet. Weston and Zane continue to battle and have gained tremendous experience which will benefit them down the line.
