The Pirate Powerlifters earned first, second, and third-place medals competing at the Crystal City Javelina Powerfest on Feb. 21.
We took eight boys, primarily experienced lifters, ready to handle business. Although it was a co-ed meet with over 10 schools in attendance, our girls had already wrapped up their season a few days prior, so this weekend our full focus was on the boys.
While powerlifting doesn’t officially separate Varsity and Junior Varsity, this was absolutely a varsity-level competition. The top lifters in each weight class were there, and the level of competition reflected that. The atmosphere was fun, busy, and full of energy from start to finish. With both boys and girls competing, the meet ran about seven hours, but the time truly flew by.
The majority of our boys completed the meet. Unfortunately, one of our lifters was unable to continue through deadlifts due to form issues with the descent of the bar, but that’s just part of the sport. It demands discipline and precision for every single lift. Even through setbacks, our boys handled themselves with maturity and composure. I know I say this every week (because it’s true!), but we are proud of these boys through all of the good lifts and the bad lifts. They are experienced competitors who understand how to compete, adjust, and represent our program with pride.
Below are the medal results:
Senior Evan Syma earned third place in the 114-weight class with a total of 580 pounds.
