The Lytle Pirate XC team traveled to Medina Valley bright and early to complete the half-way mark of our regular season. Both Varsity groups participated in the Large School Division against some tough 5A and 6A schools.
The Varsity Boys finally fielded a full team and finished 3rd out of 22 schools with all 5 finishing in the top 25 out of 154 runners. They finished 14pts behind Medina Valley and 6pts behind Brandeis. We gave both teams a run for their money with only 5 athletes as MV's top 5 scorers were all on last year's team while we only had 2 returners from last year's group. Senior Diego Reyna again led the group with his 6th place finish helping pace freshman Jacob Cantu to a 7th place finish. Adrian Reyna (15th), Sebastian Garcia (20th) and Bryan Montes (22nd) rounded out the group.
The Varsity Girls ran their first and only 5k of the season finishing 4th out of 13 schools behind three 6A schools (Brandeis, MV, and Deer Park). Frances Scotello struggled with the humidity but still managed to lead the team, placing 21st out of 117 runners. Svetlana Lopez (25th), Klayre Cook (31st), Elyse Cortinas (33rd) and Kaycee Galindo (35th) are continuing to work together which will be very important down the road.
Both Varsity groups will sit out this week and get themselves ready for the stretch run before District. They will take on some great competition at the Islander Splash in Corpus Christi (site of the Region IV Meet) next week and McNeil Invitational (site of the State Meet) the following week and then finish off at Starke Park in Seguin before District in early October.
Both JV groups ran in the Small School Division.
We had 2 boy athletes participate in the 1A-4A division with Jaden Castro finishing 11th and Weston Cook 39th out of 63 Runners.
We had one athlete, freshman Shawn Robinette, compete in the JV Boys division finishing an impressive 20th out of 197 Runners in his first ever 5k just breaking the 20 min barrier.
The JV girls finished 3rd out of 6 schools in the 1A-4A division behind Bandera and Pleasanton and ahead of Del Rio's JV, Devine and Hondo. Again, freshman Annalise Quintanilla lead the group with her 4th place finish followed by Addison Wagner (14th), Kimora Sanchez (19th), Sophia Herrera (23rd) and Isabella Sewell (36th) out of 54 runners.
The team next travels to Bandera on Saturday to start the 2nd half of the season.
