Thank you, Head Boys Basketball Coach Jacob Hernandez for recapping the final regular season game against Poteet and for sharing the summary of your season.
Pirate Nation,
Tuesday your Pirates became 28-3A District Champions by beating Poteet 80-66. Senior Zach Perez lead us in his final home game as a senior scoring 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Defensively the Pirates forced 16 steals, 11 deflections and 3 blocks. It was great effort on the defensive side to hold off a really good Poteet team who just missed the playoffs.
This team has faced a lot of adversity since May to get to this point. In May the Pirates played in their first summer tournament and went 0-4. In June the Pirates played 20 summer league games and went 2-18. All of us were counting the days till the fourth of July holiday to take a break from all the losing that had occurred over a five-week span. But as well all know, you only learn from adversity . When the Pirates returned to school in August, we knew we had potential to make it a good season and sneak into the playoffs. Little did I know the Pirates wanted the glory the teams before them had accomplished. We had many conversations on what it would take for this team to be successful. We ended ever workout by saying "Let's Get Better Each Day" . The Pirates worked each day leading up to the season and then starting winning games. Winning games led to confidence; confidence led us to the 28-3A district championship. This group may not be as talented as we had in the past, but it's a team that plays for each other and understands their role on the court. A group that understands the importance of continuing the Culture that has been set over the past ten years. The 24-25 Pirates went 20-9 overall, 13-1 in district , and state ranked for a few weeks by TABC. Now we head into this week preparing to Play Northern Oaks HS who was state ranked for half the season. Due to the new playoff format, you now have powerhouses playing each other in the first round. The Pirates know what's at stake, and they will be ready when next Tuesday arrives. Playoff details are coming soon. GO PIRATES!
Until Next Game Recap,
Jacob Hernandez
