Pirate Nation,
This past week the Pirates went 1-1, suffering their first district loss of the season. The Pirates started out strong with a huge win over Hondo 90-56. The Pirates fast tempo style was too much for Hondo forcing 19 steals, 13 additional deflections , and scoring 25 points in transition. Offensively the pirates were led by the one-two punch of Junior Chase Guevara and Senior Zach Perez. Chase had 25 points , 6 assists and 9 steals. Zach Perez had 24 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The Night belonged to Junior Darius Garcia who scored 17 points and hit 5 three pointers, 4 in a row to put the owls away. He was on fire from deep range!
Tuesday was a whole another story. The Pirates traveled to Crystal City to play in one of the toughest atmospheres in South Texas and lost 81-58. The Javilinas out muscled and out hustled us from tip off. The pirates managed to get the CC lead down to four points several times in the game but shooting woes ultimately killed us at the end. The Pirates were 3 of 25 from the three-point line and only 33 percent from the free throw line. As we approach the playoffs a loss at this time is a great teaching tool to remind the boys to continue to work and stay hungry as we chase a district championship, and a playoff run.
I have attached a copy of a story Devine News wrote about the basketball culture that has been established over the past 8 years written by Jerel Beaty that highlights many of our past and current players' scoring accomplishments. Just a great article!
