Last week the Pirates went 1-1 in District play. The week started with the Pirates traveling south to Crystal City on February 6, 2024, to take on the District leader Javelinas and lost in a high scoring battle 95-87. The Pirates played a fast style tempo to keep the game close, but the Javelinas made thirteen 3-pointers to Lytle's nine, which was the only difference in the game. Coming up short in a big game will help the team prepare for the intensity of the playoffs. Senior Jayden Perez had a career high scoring 31 points made with seven 3-pointers. He was on fire in the second half to keep us in the game.
Friday night, February 9, 2024, was Rivalry Time! The Natalia Mustangs came out for a game that would determine the second seed in the playoff brackets. The Pirates took care of business and won 61-37. From the tip off, the Pirates played relentless defense to create a fast style pace to the game. The Pirates had 12 steals as a team and forced 18 turnovers. Senior Brandon Obando led the defensive charge, shutting down one of the Districts leading scorers and holding him to six points during his time on the floor. Offensively the Pirates were led by Freshman sensation Seth Pierce scoring 17 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in three quarters of play. Junior Zach Perez scored 10 points and 7 assists while Sophomore Chase Guevara scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. With the win over the Mustangs, the Pirates secure the second seed as they head into the playoffs. This marks the seventh straight season the Pirates will be in the UIL Playoffs. The young Pirates have met the expectation and will now prepare to continue the Culture of winning in the playoffs.
The Pirates will finish the season today facing the Cotulla Cowboys in Cotulla at 6 pm. Go pirates!
