Varsity Lady Pirates vs SA Christian 11-10-2023 photo by Amira Lowery

The girls took the court on Friday, November 10, 2023, with an early 5 o’clock start time and took the win over SA Christian, 63-38. They did not get a scrimmage, so they were not sure how they would respond together as a new team with many new faces. However, the girls came out and did some really great things. They had 20 points in transition and scored 28 points from their turnovers. They are not as fast as last year, but once they get into basketball shape, that will definitely improve their defensive game. They had 17 steals and 48 of the points were in the paint. They need to work on turnovers. They had 19, but once they get some chemistry, I see that number dropping.

  • Senior Captain Calyssa Sevier had 35 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 10 deflections, 8 steals and 1 block.

  • Senior Captain Katara Whitfield had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocks.

  • Freshmen Zabella Garza had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 deflections and 4 steals.

  • Junior Lunna Reyes had 6 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal.

  • Junior Mona Perez had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 deflection and 1 steal.

  • Junior Valentina Ayala had 2 points and 1 rebound.

  • Freshmen Aliana Cardenas had 2 points and 1 rebound.

On Saturday, November 11, 2023, the girls played a physical and big Marion team but outran them up and down the floor, taking the win 68-47. They had our moments, but again, turnovers are a main issue. They must get better at this game. We had 24. The girls scored 42 points in the paint and scored 38 points off their turnovers. They had 17 steals and pressed some to see what rotation would work best for the defense to be at its best. After these two games, the girls are definitely excited about seeing what this team is going to do.

  • Senior Calyssa Sevier had her first double double, scoring 36 points and having 11 steals. She also had 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 deflections.

  • Senior Captain Katara Whitfield had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

  • Freshmen Aliana Cardenas had 6 points and 3 rebounds.

  • Junior Mona Perez had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.

  • Senior Captain Amelia Martinez had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 deflections.

  • Junior Arianna Garcia had 4 points and 4 rebounds.

  • Junior Lunna Reyes had 3 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal.

As you can see, they are getting so much more this year from the bench and that will pay off as they get deeper into the season. The Lady Pirates will travel to play a tough Navarro team tomorrow, November 14, 2023. Navarro is always aggressive and physical and that is what we need to see. If you see the girls, give them some encouragement, they are working hard and playing with Pirate Pride to represent Lytle! Go Pirates!
