There are some Friday nights that stay with you a little longer than others.
This was one of them.
A 63–0 loss hurts. There’s no way around that. It stings when you invest the time, when you care deeply about the people beside you, and when the result looks nothing like what you prepared for.
But I’ve learned something about adversity over the years: it has a way of revealing things that comfort never will.
You get tested. You get beaten. You get bruised. Sometimes you get humbled in a way you didn’t expect. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, you have a choice.
You can allow that moment to define you, or you can allow it to develop you.
Since July, we’ve talked to our kids about these first three weeks. We knew exactly what we were walking into. We knew these games would challenge us before district play. We knew there would be opportunities to win, but we also knew there would be opportunities to fall, fail, learn, adjust, and GROW.
Well, we’ve done some growing. Not all of it has been comfortable. But I believe some of the most important growth never is.
When your boat gets rocked and the water starts coming over the sides, you find out pretty quickly who is willing to keep rowing. You find out who will grab an oar. You find out who will reach for the person beside them. You find out whether the things you’ve talked about since July are just words on a wall—or whether they’ve actually become part of who you are.
That is where we are right now. Our foundation is being tested. And I believe in our foundation. I believe in our kids. I believe in our coaches. I believe in the relationships we’ve built. And I believe deeply in the direction we are headed.
That doesn’t mean we ignore what happened Friday night. Quite the opposite.
We own it.
That’s the “O” in GROW.
We look at ourselves first. We coach better. We prepare better. We practice with greater purpose. We correct what needs to be corrected, and then we put our eyes back where they belong— "Eyes Up. Eyes Forward."
Because there is nothing behind us that we can change. But there is a whole lot in front of us that we can do something about.
Now, everything changes. District football is here. And if the last three weeks have taught us anything, it’s that we know a lot more about ourselves today than we did when this season started.
We know what adversity feels like. We know what getting knocked down feels like. We know what it feels like when the boat gets rocked. Now we get to find out what we do next.
We will prepare how we’re supposed to prepare. We will be the team we’re supposed to be. We will demand growth while continuing to deliver belief into our kids. We will Give More. Put Relationships First. Own Everything. And Win Together.
And we’re going to keep rowing.
This week also means a little more. It’s Legacy Bowl week. Lytle. Natalia. This rivalry has been played by generations before our kids, and it will be played by generations after them. Our communities know what this week means. Our kids know what this week means.
But for us, it’s bigger than a rivalry. It’s our next opportunity. We don't need to erase what happened. We need to use it. Every test. Every trial. Every bruise. Every difficult conversation. Every early morning. Every rep. Every lesson.
Bring it with us. Because sometimes you have to go through rough water to discover just how strong your boat really is. Our kids have been battle tested. Our foundation has been tested. And now it’s time to ROW.
We know what’s next. We know who’s next. And we’re ready for what’s coming.
Eyes Up. Eyes Forward!
