The Lytle Lady Pirates Varsity Volleyball team wrapped up another competitive weekend, finishing 5th overall at the Devine Tournament after battling through one of the tournament's toughest pools. The tournament took place Aug. 20-22.
Friday Pool Play
Lytle opened tournament play in a challenging pool consisting of Ingram, Antonian, Crystal City, and Lytle.
🏐 Ingram def. Lytle: 25-20, 26-24
The Pirates battled throughout both sets and pushed Ingram to the very end in the second set. Despite the fight, Lytle was unable to close it out, falling 24-26.
🏐 Lytle def. Crystal City: 25-11, 25-20
The girls responded with a strong performance against Crystal City. Lytle controlled the first set 25-11 and finished the job in the second, 25-20.
🏐 Antonian def. Lytle: 25-13, 25-21
Lytle faced a talented Antonian team to finish pool play. After dropping the first set, the Pirates competed much stronger in the second but ultimately fell 21-25.
Bracket Play
Lytle opened up bracket play with a nail biter game against Hondo!
🏐 Hondo def. Lytle: 25-21, 24-26, 25-18
After dropping the opening set 21-25, the girls fought back and took an exciting second set 26-24, forcing a deciding third. Small mistakes began to add up in the final set, and Hondo was able to capitalize, taking the third 25-18.
The Pirates then faced Uvalde, giving our girls an opportunity for a rematch after falling to them in our season opener.
This time, the girls came ready.
🏐 Lytle def. Uvalde: 25-17, 25-10
Lytle started strong and, more importantly, finished strong, defeating Uvalde decisively in two sets. It was a great example of the growth we're beginning to see from this team as they learn from previous matches and make adjustments.
When the tournament was complete, Lytle finished 5th overall.

Madison Hernandez: 25 kills, 11 aces and 4 blocks
Lillian Evans: 14 kills, 11 blocks, 19 digs and 6 aces
Macey Ford: 14 kills and 10 blocks
Payton Devaney: 6 kills, 5 blocks and 17 digs
Mikailah Mejia: 33 digs
Milahni Mejia: 25 digs
We're proud of the continued growth we're seeing from this group. Playing against tough competition early in the season is giving our girls opportunities to identify weaknesses, make adjustments, and learn how to compete when matches get uncomfortable.
And there isn't much time to rest!
The Pirates travel to Ingram on Aug. 25 for a rematch, and then it's another big tournament weekend. On Aug. 27, Lytle will begin pool play at the Southwest Tournament, where the Pirates will face MacArthur, Jay, Creek View, and Roosevelt.
Every match is another opportunity to prepare for the games that matter most when district play begins. We appreciate the continued support from our parents, Lytle ISD staff, and the entire Lytle community as these girls continue to work and represent Lytle Volleyball.
