Lytle Baseball team receiving Area Championship Trophy

Lytle Pirate baseball held off a late rally by Poth to win the Area Championship at the SAISD Sports Complex on May 9. Lytle took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Mason Hill, scoring Weston Jackson. Toby Davila scored 2 pitches later on a double steal. Hill scored on a sacrifice fly by Devin Cordova. Poth answered with a run in the second and the third, bringing the score to 3-2. In the fifth inning, Lytle took advantage of 3 Poth errors and scored 5 runs on two 2-out hits by Juan Patlan and Damien Barco.

In the sixth inning, Lytle walked the first 6 batters, bringing the score to 8-5 with the bases loaded and no outs. Poth then flied out to left field. On the play, the umpires ruled that the runner at third left too early, resulting in a double play. The next batter grounded out to end the inning. In the seventh inning, Lytle had 2 base hits by Ethan Elizondo and Weston Jackson to lead off the inning but were unable to push across a run. In the bottom of the seventh, Lytle walked the first 2 Poth batters, then made an error loading the bases. The next batter popped up. Then Poth scored their sixth run on a sacrifice fly to right field. The final batter grounded out to Juan Patlan at third base ending the game.

Weston Jackson threw 6 innings giving up 3 runs and striking out 4. Ethan Elizondo picked up the win, throwing 2 innings and giving up 1 run.

Weston Jackson was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Juan Patlan was 1 for 1 with 2 RBI's and a walk. Damien Barco was 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Lytle advances to the Regional Semi-Final round for the second year in a row. They will face Orange Grove in Kenedy, Texas. Game times/information listed below.
