JH Boys Basketball Team

The Lytle Junior High Boys Basketball team brought home the District Championship!

The seventh-grade boys team hit the road to Hondo for the end-of-season District Tournament on Jan. 31, and they made sure everyone knew they came to win.

The opening game against Poteet set the tone for the day. The boys dominated from start to finish, with every player contributing to the team's victory. Leading the scoring was Caleb Roberts with 22 points, followed by Drake Castro, Mariano Davila, and Joseph Duran with 5 points each. Waylon Guillen added 4, Liam Maldonado scored 2, and Dylan Arriola finished with 1. The final score was a convincing 44–22 win over Poteet.

That win pushed the team into the winners’ bracket, where they faced the host team, the Hondo Owls. The boys came out locked in, playing tough, high-energy defense and knocking down quality shots all game long. Caleb Roberts poured in 29 points, Joseph Duran added 11, Mariano Davila had 7, Drake Castro scored 6, and Dylan Arriola chipped in 3. The victory over Hondo punched Lytle’s ticket to the championship game.

In the finals, the boys faced Crystal City — the same team that had beaten them by three points earlier in the regular season. With that loss still fresh, the boys were fired up for the rematch. The championship game started slow, and Crystal City built a six-point lead by halftime. But after the break, Lytle flipped the switch.

The second half belonged entirely to Lytle. The boys came out with relentless energy, locked down on defense, and took complete control of the game. Caleb Roberts led the charge with 31 points, while Joseph Duran added 6 and Drake Castro contributed 4. Even though only three players scored, every player made a huge impact on defense, holding Crystal City under 10 points  in the second half.

When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard told the story: Lytle 41, Crystal City 23. The boys left it all on the court and were crowned District Tournament Champions.

Championship grit. Championship defense. Championship heart.
