Lady Pirate Track Sweeps District Titles

What a day it was for LYTLE TRACK AND FIELD! HISTORIC!!!

All 4 divisions (VARSITY Boys and Girls, JV Boys and Girls) won the DISTRICT TITLE.  This is the first time we have ever done that.

JV Girls won all 4 plaques they give per division (Team Champion, 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m Champions).  The first time we have done that.

Varsity won 2 of the 4.  (Team Champion, 4x400m-have won this event every year since COVID shut down track in 2020. Now we're at five years in a row, and have been Area champions the last 4 years.)

And what better way to have accomplished this than alongside 3 of my past track athletes. Clayton Jopling and Sebastian Benavides who both went to State in track but never won a team district track title in High School but get to experience it now as coaches. Christine Jopling who was part of my first District Championship in track as a Head Coach and now she gets to experience it as a coach!  And am so proud of them and it is a privilege to be in the position I am in now.

For the Lady Pirates it was about making a statement as last year both teams finished third.  This year they came ready to compete as these girls won every running event they were entered in except one.

For the Varsity Girls, the meet came down to the last event...the 4x400m.  We were down 2 points and had been playing catch up all day to last year's District Champions (Hondo). They came in with a faster time than us (4:22 to 4:32), but we had not run this event on Varsity but once all year and not with these 4, so I knew we could put up a lot faster time.  In the picture I am telling them..."We are down by 2...we win the 4x4 we win the meet, you lose, we lose the meet." Just telling them the truth.  Though I didn't know at the time, but Klayre said a few cried before they ran because they were scared. But I knew they had it in them and the picture shows that they had nothing to fear as they posted a 4:16 to their 4:24 and positioned themselves as a top 8 team now. Proud of their moment and how they responded. It was like a home run, last second shot, hail mary to end the game!

The Varsity Girls have 10 girls and 9 advanced. We entered 7 of the 11 running events and won all 7 we participated in. We also only entered into 2 of the 6 field events and still managed to win.

I am so proud of these kids and their coaches for the time and effort that they have given ALL year.  We had 22 athletes (only 2 seniors) participate at District (10 varsity / 12 JV) which isn't very many for track, but they are hardworking, and it showed by winning both divisions. To do what they did with so few is truly a great accomplishment.

We next travel to Seguin on Wednesday 9April25 for the Area meet where we will be greeted by the 3-time and soon to be 4-time State Champion Team Randolph. Our Area Meet will also include the 27/28 5A meet which will make it exciting for a track fan.

Thank you,

Coach Gilbert Ruiz
