Thank you, Coach Jay Tope for sharing the fighting spirit of this team! Your players ended up with amazing growth and results by the time they took on Cole!
We knew Saturday was going to be a tough go for our JV2 volleyball team at the Edgewood ISD Freshman Tourney; we were missing quite a few players and the majority of teams were from much larger schools. But this team is already showing their fighting spirit, and they came back with a 1-2 record and a 7th place finish.
Match one was against the 5A Highlands Owls. As we were missing both of our setters, we brought Maddie Maldonado, Macey Ford, and Alle Dempsey from the JV1 team so that we could field a team. We lost 22-25, 20-25 but played very competitively. Jewel Settles has become a great passer in our back row and helped keep our defense steady.
The second match was versus the Memorial Minutemen, a team which we had beaten a few weeks earlier in the same gym. Things rapidly fell apart, however, as we suffered an injury to one of our girls. We also had a hard time serving and passing, which limited what we could do offensively. Memorial easily won the match, 9-25, 11-25. The good news was that one of our setters, Elyse Cortinas, returned for us following cross country.
I was the proudest of our performance against Cole High School in match three. While Cole had a huge height advantage and hit much better than the two teams earlier, we had our best serving outing of the season. We recorded 23 aces in the three-set match, and overpowered Cole 25-19, 19-25, 17-15. Madison Hernandez played her best game yet for our JV2 team.
We have a lot of work to do, and we hope to see everyone at our JV2 team's first district match Tuesday night, 5:00pm, at home versus Poteet. That will be followed at 6:00pm by JV1's match, and varsity will have Parent Night before their match with the Aggies.
