The last week of January the Pirates took on the Cotulla Cowboys and Diley Wolves going 2-0. The game of the week was against the Cotulla Cowboys when the Pirates celebrated Senior Night and won 83-62 on January 26, 2024. The night belonged to the 4 seniors, Jayden Perez, Brandon Obando, Tristen Guevara, and Drew Gonzalez. They each got the start and led the Pirates to victory. Jayden Perez had a Senior Night to remember, he scored 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals to fill the stat sheet. Jayden went 3-6 from the three-point line and just couldn't be stopped on the offensive side of the ball. Andrew Gonzalez had 8 points and 4 rebounds while Tristen Guevara had 3 points and 3 steals. Brandon, our energy guy, did not play due to an ankle sprain. This group has been overshadowed by the success of last year's group but have come into their own, leading this team to 22 wins and counting. Over the past two seasons, these four seniors have won 56 wins and counting, a district championship, bi-district championship, area championship, regional championship and the berth into the 2023 Texas 3A UIL State Tournament. Not a bad High School career for all four of them in the two years of Varsity play. Coach Hernandez says, "I am proud of this group not only for their success, but for continuing the tradition of playing hard, fast and, above all, WIN.” The Pirates will face Hondo High School tonight at 7:30 pm here in Lytle on February 2, 2024. Come out and support the Varsity girls as they go for a fourth straight district championship and the boys to follow.
