The Pirates opened district play this past Friday, January 12, 2024, against the Dilley Wolves, winning 82-54. The Pirates started off slowly and were down by 6 at the half. In the third quarter, the young Pirates turned on the defense and went to work. The team defense had 11 steals and caused 18 turnovers in the third quarter alone to go on a 27-2 run. The fast pace alone in the third quarter put the game away. Junior Zacharee Perez had a career night, scoring 29 points and having seven steals on the defensive side. Zach, at one point, scored 12 straight points in the third quarter. Sophomore Chase Guevarra had a huge game as well, scoring 24 points and also seven steals on the defensive side.
Last night, January 17, 2024, the Pirates traveled to Hondo to face the owls and won 55-47. The offense struggled all night, but the Pirates showed up defensively to secure the win. The Pirates had 19 steals as a team and pressured the Owls to turnover the ball 31 times. At the end of the night, it was a team win with all 11 players receiving playing time and playing their tails off on the defensive side of the ball. These young men still have some issues to correct by Friday night, January 19, when they play a tough and physical Crystal City team. The game will be held in Lytle at 7:30 pm. Black out the stands (wear a black tee) for the boys and girls this Friday. Go Pirates!
