If anyone knows Coach Lori, you know she has a game day routine and is very superstitious, so yesterday, playing at 5 pm, she was not thrilled. The girls started out slow on defense, but Amelia Martinez was on fire from tip off, hitting two 3 pointers within the first three minutes and that kept the Lady Pirates in the game. Aliana Cardenas scored off the bench to help take a 3-point lead at the half. They were just flat on the press, so only had 12 steals for the night. At the half, the coaches told the girls the 3rd quarter would dictate the outcome. The team came out in the 3rd and scored 28 points to Hondo’s 8. The defense came alive and there was no stopping them. The final score was 69-39. The girls scored 40 points in the paint and 18 points off their turnovers. The girls play so well together, and everyone is involved in offense. Four of the girls had double figures. It is exciting watching these girls come together. The team picked up win #20 for the year, taking their record to 20-7 and are now 4-0 in District play. The Lady Pirates will take on Crystal City here in Lytle on Friday night, January 19, 2024, to finish off the first round of play. The season is flying by. If you have not seen the girls play, they would love to see you at a game. Congrats to the boys on their win against Hondo.
