What the judges had to say:

“Overall this was a well-made film. Thank you for putting up a white screen between jump cuts. It made it easier to watch. He seems to be a wonderful, inspiring man that I would like to meet. Keep writing stories and making films.”

“A very inspiring documentary about Coach Ruiz's valiant battle with cancer and the community that rallies around him, even as he continues to live the battle cry of never give up and strive for excellence always. The vision and creativity is inspiring, the story is cohesive and interesting and very straight forward. Cinematography, lighting and art design are also straight forward. Nothing fancy, but simple enough to tell the story…Overall, a very successful tribute to an obviously fine man and very beloved Coach. I wish him continued strength and positive energy on his journey so he may continue to inspire the people in his community. Your film is an outstanding tribute to a shining example of the kind of man we hope our coaches will be. Keep up the good work.”

“This is a well written, planned, and executed documentary short film based on a highly emotional and powerful subject matter. Based on the past tense used in the opening graphics, I was expecting the worst in the end. I was very happy to find that Coach Ruiz is still fighting the fight and inspiring others. Excellent subject matter. This was a very tough semifinal competition. Keep up the good work!”

“Everyone knows/has been effected by chronic illness, but this story is very original. It's a solid story about how this man and his true effect on his friends/family/athletes/etc. Great story of a very strong man. Keep up the good work!”

“This is a heartwarming story about inspiration. Not only is the primary character inspirational, the secondary characters (members of his support system) are inspirational as well. This story stirs emotion in the viewer. When that happens, you know you have made a valuable documentary!”
