Your Lytle Pirate Track Team traveled to Kingsville to participate in the Region IV – 4A Track meet this weekend in hopes of finishing in the top 2 to advance to State.
The weekend started great with 2 personal bests in the 3200m run but tapered off on Saturday. There were controversies on both days starting on Friday morning’s 4A girls 3200m run as someone rang a bell early causing girls to think they were on their final lap and it created mass confusion at the end. Through all the confusion Clarissa Cantu still managed to set a personal best in the fastest region in the state. Isaiah Gomez also had a personal best to finish 4th and sophomore Carlos Tamayo in his first regional experience had a great finish just 2 seconds of his personal best. Freshman Noelia Medina finished the morning in the discus gaining valuable experience for next year’s meet.
Saturday Katelin VanDong started the morning in the shot put and finished her career with a 13th place finish. In the afternoon we had our best opportunity to get out as senior Edson Hernandez had the 2nd fastest time coming in all year. But poor execution in the start and not being aggressive when the pushing began, forced him off the track and he never recovered. But when one loses an opportunity…another shall rise. Freshman Mark Cantu got around the first part of the shoving and almost became the victim of the second. But after avoiding the 2nd tumbling runner and getting spiked he managed to maneuver himself into 2nd with 200m to go. The 57.6 second first lap proved to be too fast for him and he couldn’t hold it the last 130m, but he gave it a run and placed 4th. He will be older, faster and stronger next year and hopefully be able to hang on. In the 1600m run, Clarissa Cantu faced the same fast field and had a strong last lap to finish 10th. With the transition of moving down to 3A next year and her new sense of focus, it has her eyeing a chance to advance next year like her brother. For the boys 1600m run we were hoping the disappointment of the 800m would propel our seniors to change this outcome, but again we didn’t get out with the urgency we hoped for. They finished strong but never gave themselves a chance and finished a respectable 4th and 5th.
I would like to thank all the people that made this year possible(Coaches, Teachers, Administrators, Parents, Transportation, Cafeteria, Trainers,…)
Though we did not qualify anyone for State the 2nd year in a row after going 11 straight, we did see a lot of new young kids that have the drive to get there. And as long as there is one…we will try.
