“I learn teaching from teachers. I learn golf from golfers. I learn winning from coaches.” – Harvey Penick

The 18th of November, the 8th grade Lady Pirates had their first two games before they begin District play. Coach Bohl and I have been stressing the importance of working hard in practice. Unfortunately, these ladies haven’t started to trust our words. When I have to run the horses to get them to run at game speed, then they haven’t yet understood the importance of every minute of practice. It must be fast and hard every minute of practice or else they will not have the stamina to play at game speed when it counts.

We opened the season against the Devine Arabians. We played with them for a half. We were only down 16 to 7 but conditioning showed in the second half. We could not handle their speed and we were outscored 22 – 8 to make the final score, Lytle 15 Devine 38. Eisabel Guerrero led in scoring with 4 points. Cadee Martinez and Morgan scored 3. Mariah Gomez and Kaylee scored 2 and Marissa added a free throw.

The second game was against Hondo. They had been beaten by Pleasanton by about the same score as ours against Devine so I felt we could get our first victory. We should have been leading at the half. We were down 18 to 22. If we would have hit 50% of our charity shots we would have been tied. We shot 16 free throws and only made 5. We had outplayed Hondo and at the half Coach Bohl told them they had to stop #22. You can tell them what they have to do to win the game but they must execute the plan on the floor. Hondo scored 25 points in the third quarter and was led with 13 points by #22. We scored only 2 and the referees swallowed their whistles in the fourth quarter and we were outscored 57 to 25. Cadee scored 9 points to lead us in scoring. Marissa hit a nice three-point shot to score 5 along with Yadi who also scored 5. Morgan and Mariah each scored 3.

Congrats to the 7th grade on their Championship. Thanks to Coach Wilson for giving us a couple of games under our belt before our first District game against a tough Jourdanton team. I am afraid our three weeks of practice will have been for naught as far as conditioning as we return from our week break. “One week without running makes one weak.”  The B team kicks off its season at 5 and the A team plays at 6.

“Basketball is a game of conditioning and fatigue. If you don’t have stamina, you’ll never have the presence of mind to exercise judgment.” – Unknown
