“Mental toughness is many things. It is humility because it behooves all of us to remember that simplicity is the sign of greatness, and meekness is the sign of true strength. Mental toughness is spartanism with the qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication. It is fearlessness, and it is love.” – Vince Lombardi
Last night the 8th-grade Lady Pirates began their District Season at home against the Lady Squaws from Jourdanton. Coach Wilson was able to get approval to play in two gyms but the Jourdanton coach only wanted two halves of 12-minute running clock. Bad form Coach. I think if my B team would have had the opportunity for a full game then we would have prevailed. We trailed 15 to 4 after the first half. We played a better second half holding the red team to 2 points but we couldn’t overcome their lead. We scored five points to make the final score Jourdanton 17, Lady Pirates 9. We ran at least 6 inbounds plays that Katelyn had open shots. Unfortunately, she only hit one of those shots. She did lead us in scoring with 3 points. Nivea, Francis, and Adeline all added two points. We are currently 0-1.
The A Team played a full game on the clock but our second half still hasn’t matched the play in the first half. However, this time it did not hurt us. We had an 11 to 8 lead at the half. We had open looks that didn’t go down, we had shots rattle around but not drop but Cadee secured our victory with a free throw with 1.6 seconds remaining. We ended up on top with a final score of Lady Pirates 14 Jourdanton 11. Morgan led us in scoring with two nice jump shots which tallied 5 points. Eisabel led us in scoring with 6 points. Dakota added a bucket and Cadee hit one free throw. It was the only one of seven but it gave us a two-possession lead. We were a sounder team in both groups defensively. We kept our guarding distance and it was good to see them keep Jourdanton off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
Next Monday we travel to Cotulla for our second district contest. Thank you for all the parents who supported our ladies last night.
“What I am waiting for is a game where I don’t miss a tackle, where I and everyone around me do everything to the absolute letter of perfection. I do have that game in my repertoire and until that time I will not be fulfilled.” - Joe Greene
