“Because a thing seems difficult for you, do not think it is impossible for anyone to accomplish. But whatever is possible for another, believe that you too are capable of it.” Marcus Aurelius Antonius
Well, the Groundhog was pretty accurate. When I parked the bus at Saint Mary’s Hall, I was greeted by blooming Bluebonnets. The Mesquites have put on new shoots and Shot Puts and Discus are beginning to fly. Yes, I think it is beginning to look a lot like Spring. This last weekend the throwers from the High School and Junior High competed in a competition to begin setting marks.
The Junior High threw in Pearsall. The 8th grade threw well. Natalie Pacheco placed in the top 4 for discus (61’6”) and won the shot put with a 31’ put. The other ladies who threw for the 8th grade was Sarah Yruarte, Dakota Tumlinson, and Cambri Martinez. The 8th-grade boys were led by Alex Medina. Alex set a new Personal Record with a 102’9” throw placing him second. Alex worked hard in the offseason and attended a throwing camp in Kingsville. His best throw as a seventh grader was 79’4”. The exciting thing is the competition between Alex and his sister Noelia who is throwing for the Varsity. He beat her this weekend for the first time.
The seventh-grade ladies did well for a first meet but we have much work to accomplish. Alexis Flores placed 1st in discus with a 54’ discus and placed 3rd in shot with a 22’10” shot. Ysabella Diaz placed 2nd in shot with a 23’3.25”. Andrea Aguilar also threw for the 7th grade. Jacob Guevara placed 4th in 7th-grade boy's discus with a throw of 67’.
The High School attended the Saint Mary’s Hall Relay meet. The Boys competed as a varsity team and the girls competed as a Junior Varsity team. We had two ladies throw and win both contests which were expected. I look forward to seeing how they would have placed in the varsity competitions. Noelia Medina fresh off a second-team district basketball accolade wanted to test her ankle and threw 1st in discus with a 90’9” throw and placed second in shot behind my freshman thrower April Bodie. Noelia threw 28’1.5”. April spent the fall completing the offseason lifting program and placed second in discus with a throw of 82’11” and won the shot put with a 29’8.75”. This is the best throw I have ever had from an incoming freshman.
The boys are led by Victor Garcia who begins his final campaign for team Lytle. He set PR’s in the discus (125’11”) and in shot (42’6.5”). Victor placed about 4th in both events. Cort Haltom enters his freshman year with the same promise as April. He threw a 112’2” discus which is the best freshman throw I’ve ever had competed. He also threw a 33’3.5” James Black threw a 96’6” discus and the team finished first against the other throwers. Robey Harold set a new PR with a fine 38’.25” throw. His throw helped the shot put lads place 3rd.
To top off the day James, Robey, Noelia, and April were the only coed throwers who competed in the throwers relay and set a beginning record of 103.81 time for the throwers 4x100 relay.
It was a good beginning for the throwers that represent Lytle, but we have much work before district. We throw at Medina Valley next week.
