The Lytle Cross Country team traveled to Corpus on Sunday to participate in the 2018 Region IV-3A Cross Country meet yesterday in hopes of either finishing as a top ten individual, not on a team or be a top 4 team.
Clarissa Cantu started the day for the Pirates as she tried to lead her team and return herself to the State Meet. We talked about being in the top 15 to start off and then try and work herself up in the second mile. She did just that as she was 14thafter the first mile and left nothing to chance as she pushed forward the last mile to finish 9th and help herself get to the State meet as well as help the team finish 13th. I was so proud of her effort. She came in sitting 16th, but we knew she was better than that and proved it yesterday. When you look at the girls, she has run against the last 3-4 meets, she has made up lots of ground on every single one of them at the time she has needed it the most. Now we hope she can finish her career on a high note and try and finish in the top 25.
After Clarissa’s effort, our young boys team had no other choice but to give nothing less than their best and they did just that. They took advantage of SA Cole not having their number 1 runner and two (JC Hernandez-7th and Carlos Tamayo-9th) of their own finishing in the top 10 to help the team finish as Regional Runner-Ups. With the boys, we talked about having the top 4 guys being in the top 30 to start off and just having the rest stay close. They went 7, 9, 19, 28, 42, 46 and 83 out of 181 runners to finish 2nd out of 24 teams and return to the State meet for the first time since 2013(that group was state champs). We are so proud of this group not only because of how young they are but also because they have had to go to their #7, 8, and 9th runners due to injuries to get there. They have this group sitting 10th but I know that we are at least 7thand hope that if we can get one of our guys healthy and maybe finish around 5th.
I would like to thank all those who took the time to go watch this group of student-athletes yesterday. We hope that many of you can make the trip up I35 to Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on November 3rd at 12:10 (3A Girls) and 12:40 (3A Boys).
