The girls beat Natalia last night, January 18, 2022, in a packed gym 55-51. It was down to the wire with this game! We were missing Nicole Godines and Fizz Hutton and it hurt us on the defensive side with our press, but Katara Whitfield, Rose Scotello, and Kaylee Diaz stepped up and gave us some great minutes to fill those spots. We were up 15-8 at the end of the 1st and looked good, besides complaints that it was super-hot! Everything was going our way and at the half, we were up 29-16. However, in the last few games, the 3rd quarter has not been our best. We talked about this in the locker room and about stopping Natalia from getting to the 3-point line. Natalia shot twenty-nine 3’s but only made six of them. Those six shots kept them in the game. The girls won in transition and we scored 16 to their 4 points. We also outscored them 38-18 in the paint. We outrebounded them on the defensive side 34 to 21, a great stat for us.
I’m hoping to have a full team playing and on track by next week, fingers crossed. Basketball is a TEAM sport and these ladies have proved this during the last two games, with girls stepping up each time. I am so proud of them and the fight they have. We are now 10-1 in District play and are 20-8 for the Season as the Natalia game was our 20th win for the Season.
Leading the team was Caylssa Sevier who had a double-double with 24 points, 13 rebounds, 4 deflections, 4 steals. Kataria Whitfield had her best game of the year so far with her first double-double with 18 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 deflection, and 1 steal. Cadee Martinez scored 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 deflections, and 2 steals. Amelia Martinez had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 deflection. Adrianna Garcia had 2 points and 2 rebounds. Kaylee Diaz contributed 1 point, 4 rebounds, 3 deflections, 2 steals, and 1 block. Rose Scotello didn’t score but she gave me great minutes, getting 3 rebounds and playing great defense when called upon. Sofia Hutton did not score but grabbed 4 rebounds and helped on defense in the paint.
