The Junior High Pirates travel to Cotulla on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. The game was scheduled for Thursday but with possible unsafe driving conditions, it was moved up for safety reasons.
The Pirates got on the board in the first 2 minutes of the game to end the 1st quarter 6-0 against the Cowgirls with points from #1 Mendoza, #2 Muraira (each with 1 free throw), #14 Villarreal and Sewell claimed 2 points each also. Heading into the half, the Cowgirls had a couple of fast breaks that the Pirates couldn't stop, putting the Pirates down by 2 in the half, even with free-throw points from #2 Muraira, #14 Villarreal, and #51 McDonald.
The Lytle Pirates played strong zone defense but couldn't connect with the basket, finishing the 3rd quarter with only a 3 pointer from #2 Muraira. The Pirates were still behind, 13-19.
Heading into the 4th, once again #2 Muraira scoring 10 points in the 4th quarter and #52 McDonald adding 1 free throw, the Pirates inched their way back with a hot streak to recover the lead. However, the Pirates just ran out of time, losing to the Cowgirls. The Pirates displayed great teamwork and determination. We are immensely proud of these young ladies; they have come a long way considering more than half the team being new to the program. Remarkable things are coming to Lytle Athletics!
