8-29-2022 Pirate Cross Country at Medina Valley

The Lytle Pirate Cross Country team traveled down the road to Medina Valley this past Saturday, August 27, 2022, for our second Meet of the year and the first for our Junior High team. We had a wonderful day and I was enormously proud of how we competed all the way through against some bigger schools.

The Varsity girls started the morning running in the Large School Division and running a 5k which is a little out of our comfort zone. We were out two runners but the rest handled it like champs and finished as runner-ups against 14 other schools in their first 5K race falling only to 6A Cibolo Steele. We had two finishes in the top 15 and medal; Moriah Gomez in 10th and Marissa Lopez in 13th, and all finished in the top 50 out of 131 runners.

We had one runner in the Varsity Girls Small school division, Nivea Sanchez, who battled and set a Personal Record, finishing 36th out of 116 runners.

In the Small School Boys Division, the Varsity boys were crowned Meet Champions as all 9 runners finished in the top 30 out of 157 runners. Five of the 9 finished in the top 15 and medal; Abel Sanchez in 5th, Johnny Rey Alvarez in 6th, Brandon Obando in 8th, Tristan Lopez in 10th, and Yandel Esquivez in 14th. We are slowly figuring out who will be on Varsity to help our 4 returning lettermen.

We had 3 in the Junior Varsity girls competing with Kimora Sanchez leading the girls with a 27th finish out of 216 runners.

We had 4 running in the Junior Varsity Boys division and Freshman Lucas Salazar finished 6th and medaled. We needed one more to qualify as a team.

A highlight note: the 7th Grade Girls were crowned Meet Champions! Don't think we have ever had that happen as long as I have been here.

The team next travels to River City Community Church Athletic Fields in San Antonio on Saturday, September 3, 2022 to participate in the 20th Annual FEAST Patriot Cross Country Invitational. We are excited about this Meet. This is a fast course and our girls will get their 2nd chance against #3 Poth and the boys get a shot at #8 Boyd, who is scheduled to run and are making a long trip down for this Meet (above Fort Worth).

I want to thank all the parents and staff who attended. We have an opportunity to have a historic year and I would like as many of you to take part in it. With your encouragement, these student-athletes can accomplish something they never thought was possible.

Individual results

It was a truly wonderful showing for Lytle. I had lots of Pirate Pride seeing the strength of the Lytle program outshine so many large schools. Congrats to all runners, their fans, and coaches! This album is huge, and I will pare it down to the best shots soon, but lots of really cool running action shots to share: https://photos.app.goo.gl/RkYsku9jttb19ekN9
