First and foremost, on behalf of our staff and program, I would like to thank Lytle ISD and our Pirate community for supporting the Peanut Butter Bowl. It was great to see our community come together and support a great cause. We collected 875 jars of peanut butter, which will be able to feed many families in need.
Last Friday, August 26, 2022, the Pirates took on Jefferson in game one of the 2022 season. Our players have shown a lot of improvement in a year and we competed against a good team on the road. It was a physical game, but we definitely held our own and it showed the growth and toughness that we, as a staff, began to see during our first off-season together. It was a tight game and after one half, Jefferson held a small lead over us, 12-0.
Offensive contributors include quarterback Connor Martin with 5 rushes for 27 yards, wide receiver Hudson Mask claimed 1 reception for 14 yards and some stellar play up front by offensive lineman Austin Dubose and Jacob Guevara. Defensive standouts include linebacker Roland Cordova with 12 Tackles, 2 Assists, 1 Tackle for loss, and 1 quarterback sack, cornerback Darren Martinez with 5 Tackles and 1 Assist, cornerback Hudson Mask with 3 Tackles and 1 Assist, defensive tackle Damien Ramon with 3 Tackles and linebacker Carlos Gonzalez with 3 Tackles and 3 Assists.
Our team is competing and our kids are believing. We displayed the kind of toughness that we know is critical to winning games. Although the outcome is not what we wanted, we know that our kids are playing hard and trusting our process. There were some great moments in the game, but there is still work to be done.
