We had a GREAT showing at one of the biggest Meets in the state at the 20th Annual FEAST Patriot Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday, September 3, 2022. There were over 150 teams and over 3600 runners in 10 divisions. Both Varsity Boys and Girls were crowned Meet Champions in the High School Varsity 1A-4A Divisions and the Junior Varsity Girls were Runner-Ups in the High School Junior Varsity Girls 2 Mile Division.
The Varsity Girls started the day with all 6 girls finishing in the top 40 out of 227 runners with 3 finishing in the top 20 and receiving a medal; Moriah Gomez in 8th, Marissa Lopez in 9th, and Samantha Mujica in 16th place. With that effort, they bested 30 other schools to be crowned Meet Champions, including #3 Poth. Of course, Poth was missing an important piece and we were missing 2, which is setting up for some intense match-ups coming in the next few weeks.
The Varsity Boys continue to surprise me as they had 4 finishes in the top 20; Johnny Alvarez in 7th, Abel Sanchez in 9th, Brandon Obando in 12th, and Tristan Lopez in 19th place, and were also crowned Meet Champions out of 27 teams. What is surprising to me is how convincingly they have won the last two Meets without their only Senior and leader of their team, Robert Wagner, who is still recovering but should be back soon.
The Junior Varsity Girls had a surprising Runner-Up Team finish. They had an excellent showing by the Sanchez sisters as Nivea Sanchez posted a Personal Record and broke 14 minutes on her way to a 5th place finish and her sister Kimora Sanchez finished 11th out of 127 runners.
The Junior Varsity Boys did not have enough runners for a team this week and did not have anyone finish in the top 20. But they were in the biggest field of them all as over 450 runners ran through a narrow course and Lucas Salazar managed to navigate himself to a 44th place finish and our highest finisher.
We are nearing the halfway point of our season and if you want the opportunity to see them, the closest we will be is this weekend when we travel to Bandera. After that, our next closest Meet will be our last in Poth before we get ready for our Championship run, which hopefully will end at Round Rock on November 5th.
