12-6-2022 Varsity Boys Basketball at Southwest ISD Tournament Recap

Your 11th State Ranked Pirates competed in the Southwest ISD Tournament as the only 3A school facing some tough 4A-6A teams over five games. The Pirates started off the tournament 3-0 and advanced to the winner's bracket. During pool play, the Pirates beat Southwest 68-49, McAllen High School 78-49, and Harlingen South 68-51.

Then came the #1 team in 4A, the Dallas Carter Cowboys. Stepping on the floor and having the opportunity to play a powerhouse like Dallas Carter was priceless.  By gametime, we were considered the Cinderella of the tournament and had become the fan favorites to take down Goliath. With the Southwest High School student body and other team players and coaches behind us cheering our boys on, the stage was set for an all-out battle. The Pirates came out strong from tipoff, playing man to man defense and holding their own. With the smallest guy on Dallas Carter, being 6'5, the Pirates played tough and never let up. Early foul trouble trying to rebound over the Cowboys put the Pirates in a bind in the first quarter. Freshmen Chase Guevera and Junior Jayden Perez had to step in and help face the Cowboys. Ultimately, the clock struck twelve and the Cinderella run was over. The Pirates lost 75-52. Chase Guevera came in and played defense against a highly recruited point guard and gave him all he could handle. Jayden Perez hit 4 threes and finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Senior Jordan Balderaz put on a show the entire tournament and outplayed Carter's highly touted recruits' possession by possession. He scored 26 points and 12 rebounds against Carter while showing everyone he can play with the best. Jordan Balderaz earned all-tournament honors, scoring 128 points in the five games while averaging 25.6 pts and 10 rebounds for the tournament. The Pirates then lost to NISD Stevens in the third-place game 50-45.

Season record 7-2 overall
