The Lytle Pirate Cross Country team traveled to River City Community Church Athletics Fields on Saturday, September 2, 2023, to participate in the biggest and fastest meet we will probably attend all year. How fast? We saw Boerne Champions Elizabeth Leachman run 15:54 5k and won by over 2 minutes. She is coached by Jonathan Tate, husband to Tanya Tate, our Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
Though we didn't come home with a trophy or with lots of medals, we did find out how fast we are and how we stack up among Region IV teams regardless of classification.
The Varsity boys ran the Open 5k against some of the fastest runners in Region IV and held their own. They finished 7th out of 43 schools, behind four 6A and two 5A schools, with 4 of the 6 being ranked in the top 10 in their respective divisions. They also redeemed themselves from last week's loss to Boerne at Medina Valley, where we lost by 2. On Saturday, Boerne finished 18th, 185 points behind Lytle. Both Abel and Johnny led the way for the Pirates and if we can stay healthy, we will be tough to beat down the stretch.
The Junior Varsity ran in the Boys Varsity 5k and also held their own. They finished 8th out of 33 with Diego Reyna being our lone medalist.
The Varsity girls keep pushing on as they finished 2nd out of 32 teams. Frances Scotello was our only medalist on Saturday and what they continue to do is amazing. Right now, we only have 2 girls from last year's State team, and they are still managing to be very competitive. Their only loss in this young season has been to the #2 team in 3A, Poth.
In the Junior Varsity girls’ division, we did not have enough to fill a team, but we did have 3 of the 4 medal as Addison Wagner finished 2nd, Annika Robles 6th and Isabella Sewell 16th.
The team now enters the middle of the season, and they know that we still have a way to go. I hope that we can stay focused and healthy down the stretch and maybe get a chance to make it back to State.
This week we will travel to Bandera City Park to participate in the 2nd Annual Steve Golemon Bandera Invitational.
