The Varsity team took a trip to Round Rock and Old Settler's Park EARLY on Friday morning, September 22, 2023, to allow some of our younger runners the opportunity to run the STATE COURSE. We have 2 new boys and 3 new girls on the team and giving them the opportunity to compete at the HOKA Invitational will hopefully pay dividends in November if we can return.
The boys started the day running in the 4A division. We were hoping to run against the #2 & 3 teams in 4A, but they accepted their bid to run on Saturday, September 23, 2023. We did get to run against the #6, 8, 9, & 10 though and with only a gap of 23 seconds between our #1-5 runners, it helped us capture 1st out of 35 schools. That is either due to our top end not running well or our bottom half having a great day. I think it was a little of both, but we know that if we can return in over a month, we can hopefully fix that problem, since we won't have to leave at 4:30 am to run at 8:30 am.
After having our worst outing last week at the Islander Invitational, the girls bounced back, finishing 3rd out of 38 teams. They finished behind both #2 teams, 3A Poth and 2A Hamilton, but managed to beat the #1 team, 2A Goldthwaite, and the #6, McGregor, and #9, Dalhart, in 3A. It again proved that if we can just stay focused with such a young group that they can return to the State Meet and maybe challenge for that 3rd place medal again.
We have one more Meet in Poth on September 30, 2023, before District and we hope that we can stay healthy and make another run at some State Medals. The last regular season poll came out on Saturday and it has the girls at #4 and the boys at #2 and that is the best showing in the top 10 of any 3A Program. However, we also hope that we can prove that wrong and finish higher; we have a month to do it in.
