Back to School Info from Principal Stewart

August 5, 2022

Dear Lytle High School Pirate Families,

I am so excited for the upcoming year. I have some wonderful things planned for this year and I want to share them with you as well as give some information that will help make the year run smoothly. Please take a few minutes to read through the information and feel free to contact the campus if you have any questions.

The first day of school will be August 11, 2022 but many of our students have already been on campus preparing for sports, band, cheerleading, dance, etc.

We have a Freshman Orientation planned for August 10th at 2pm. During this time we will go over some general information, pass out schedules, and then take students on a tour of the campus so that they feel more comfortable on Day One.

Also on August 10th, Upperclassmen will pick up their schedules as follows: Seniors 3-4pm, Juniors 4-5pm, and Sophomores 5-6pm. Please note that if your student owes a fine from last year or they are not fully registered, they will not have a schedule.

Chromebooks will be passed out beginning on Friday, August 12th, to those that have returned their completed contracts. There will be no money required for Chromebook insurance this year.

We will have a Back to School Night on September 6th from 6-7:30pm. This will be the time to walk your student’s schedule, meet their teachers, and be exposed to some of the great things going on at Lytle High School.

Our school board did vote to relax our dress code a bit this year. This code can be found in the Lytle ISD Student Handbook and the link is attached for you.

Lytle ISD Student Handbook 2022-2023

Attendance will be very, very important this year. Texas has a compulsory attendance law and it basically states that a student must be in attendance 90% of the school year in order to get credit for classes. This is in addition to passing classes with a 70 or higher. When students are absent, they miss instruction, so they must be here if at all possible. When students are out, please send them with a Dr. note or a parent note. This will help to excuse absences so that work may be made up. We may accept 5 parent notes per semester.
This year, each teacher will be creating their own web page. This will allow them to get information out to you that is specific to their class. Please be on the lookout for these pages and it would also be a great idea to sign up for any Reminds that teachers send out.

Our district calendar is available on www.lytleisd.org for your convenience and a link is attached. Please make sure that you are aware of the school day calendar and any important testing dates. This will help in scheduling appointments for students.

On the first day of school, students will move to all of their classes and they will receive a syllabus and supply list for the school year. Supplies should be very limited as each student is issued a Chromebook and much of our work is done in Google. This year, each student will receive a 2 inch binder, a pencil pouch, and a set of dividers. Backpacks are encouraged.

Please note that safety is a big focus for us at Lytle ISD. We will have regular drills to prepare for any emergency situation and we will continue to take precautions to protect our students from illnesses. Masks are not required but students have the choice to decide if they want to wear them or not. We will continue to deep clean our campuses daily and we will also continue to NOT accept food deliveries from the outside. Please do NOT drop off food for your student during the school day. They may bring food from home in their backpacks or they may eat in our cafeteria.

In order to keep all students safe and the campus secure, students must wear their badges daily as this is their key to enter the buildings. Lost badges may be replaced for a fee.

Registration for the school year is completely online at www.lytleisd.org. If you need assistance with registration or the uploading of information, please contact our front office at 830-709-5105, and we will be glad to assist you. Please note that all incoming freshmen will be required to provide proof of residency prior to completing registration. If this requirement has not been completed, a schedule will not be provided.

We will not be registering students on the first day of school. Beginning with Day 2, students and parents may make appointments to register and this way we are able to honor the time of our parents and students and they are not just sitting and waiting for help. Please call 830-709-5105 for an appointment and please pass this information along to anyone new to our district. Registration will require proof of residency, a current drivers license from the parent, social security cards for both the student and parent, an original birth certificate, and withdrawal paperwork from the previous school district, including the final report card. Parents needing affidavits may contact the school to make an appointment to have these completed.

As previously mentioned, each High School student will be issued a ChromeBook and will be required to have these charged daily for class. There will be a form required for Chromebook check out and this must be on file before a computer can be issued. This form will be passed out on August 10 at schedule pick up or it can be found at the following link: Lytle ISD CB Loan Agreement 22-23

Lytle ISD does drug test our students that represent our school in any way. This includes athletes, band members, students who participate in any UIL activities, ROTC, and those that drive. We will test periodically throughout the year. More information can be provided on our district website.

Students are allowed to drive to school and park on campus if they have a valid driver's license and current liability insurance paperwork. Students who drive will be required to register their vehicles with the campus and to obtain an annual parking permit. Student parking is allowed in the front parking lot and any overflow may park near the baseball field. Students may NOT park in the Junior High lot, behind the Ag classrooms, or in back of the gym.

Parent drop off and pick up is directly in front of the High School. Please enter the HS on CR 681 and exit onto 2790. There will be traffic so please watch carefully so that our students continue to stay safe. Student parking is in this lot and they will be crossing traffic.

Cell phones are allowed on campus before school, during lunches, and after school ONLY. They are NOT allowed to be used during class. Please help us enforce this rule so that students are using their time to learn in class. Cell phones that are picked up will be sent to the front office and if this is a frequent issue, fines may accrue and disciplinary action may be taken.

Grade reports will be available every four weeks and at the end of each grading cycle. The first grading report will be mailed home in October, but after that, they will all be available on Ascender in the Parent Portal only. Please make sure that you have access to this and if you have difficulty, please call us and we can help.

This year, the High School will be moving to the House System. We feel that healthy competition will help both encourage attendance and make school more fun for our students. We will be posting information about this system and events that are scheduled around it. Please watch our website for more information.

Pep rallies for all sports will occur periodically throughout the school year. We will be holding most pep rallies at the end of the day so that our parents and community members can attend. Please watch for dates and times to be announced on our website or Reminds.

The High School will also be opening an online spirit store this year. Students may purchase House shirts and spirit items through this forum and this will help to support our campus. We will be working with a local vendor to sell the following items:

  • Jackets
  • Spirit t-shirts
  • Ball caps and bucket hats
  • Socks

More information will follow. We encourage not only our students to show Pirate Pride but also our family and community members!

Lytle High School is a special place and the staff is working hard to make sure that this is a place where our kids want to be and that they are safe. If you have questions or need assistance in any way, please feel free to contact us. It is going to be a great year to be a pirate!

Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone,
