8-29-2023 High School Volleyball Recap
This past week, Lytle High School volleyball took on Holy Cross in a home match on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. Holy Cross always has a quick team that picks up everything and this year it was no different! Our girls were able to take one match and keep the others close, but ultimately lost 3-1.
Thursday, August 24, 2023, was the start of the Southwest Legacy Tournament. We were placed in a pool with Randolph, East Central and Wagner. We played well against East Central and Wagner, keeping up with them but ultimately losing. Randolph dominates the pool and took the match from us as well.
This is a three-day tournament, and we were placed in another pool on Friday morning, August 25, 2023, with YWLA, Kennedy and Cole. We made some lineup changes against our first opponent, YWLA, bringing up a Junior Varsity middle, so we could have a big front row and move one of our hitters to libero. While we lost a very close game, we saw some changes that we could make and decided to go against the norm, eliminating the libero position in our team. The result was an amazing and fun game where we dominated Kennedy and had a good time doing it. We went on to defeat Cole to end the day. We have 8 very strong players that play better when they can be on the floor together and 5 strong hitters that can also pass the ball. Eliminating the Libero opened possibilities we had never considered.
We finished up our week in bracket play on Saturday, August 26, 2023, in the Bronze bracket. We started with Wagner again, losing in three sets. This left us in the third place match where we had to take on Natalia. We thoroughly stomped Natalia in two sets and hope this is how district play will be with our new no libero lineup.
Stand out players were Alyssa Sprenger, who made the change from Libero to setter when we needed more consistent sets, Calyssa Sevier, who has powerful attacks when we need them, Lily Evans, who made the move from middle hitter to right side when we needed big hands in the other teams face, and Frankie Scotello, who moved from outside hitter to libero and finally to middle hitter when we needed consistent player in those positions.
We have games tonight, August 29, 2023, against Memorial at home; Junior Varsity 2 plays at 5pm, Junior Varsity 1 starts at 6pm, and Varsity plays at 7pm. Volleyball teams play Southwest Legacy on Friday, September 1, 2023; Junior Varsity starts at 5pm and Varsity starts play at 6pm. Come out to support the girls!
