8-22-2023 Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball Year to Date

This year Lytle High School Volleyball has gotten off to a great start. We have four seniors, four juniors, a sophomore and two freshmen rounding out our roster. We should have a great season for our seniors and be building for the future with our underclassmen.

We began by hosting a scrimmage on August 5, 2023, with Center Point, Memorial, Burbank, and Somerset High Schools. All schools brought both their Junior Varsity and Varsity teams to compete. This provided the opportunity for all teams to get a look at how their teams perform in game situations. It was a good time with good competition.

We began our regular season with a home opener against Uvalde High School on August 8, 2023. Varsity took the match, winning 3-1, but Junior Varsity had a hard first bout. The Junior Varsity starting lineup has four freshmen, so we are just starting to get the feel for a faster, more organized game. This is a great first match for each of our teams because Uvalde is always strong.

Next, we began a series of Varsity volleyball tournaments we play each year to prepare for the season. We played in the Edgewood Tournament, first on August 10, 2023. We went 3-2 in pool play, placing us in the championship bracket. We drew Pleasanton in the first round of bracket play. Losing to them put us on the consolation side of the championship bracket where we made it to the final game before dropping our best played match to Del Rio. We tried out a few different lineups, placing our starters in different key roles. Alyssa Sprenger was our MVP for the tournament, playing both libero and setter during different matches until we could find our groove.

We returned home to play a tough-hitting Stacey High School Varsity team on August 15, 2023. The Junior Varsity came away with a victory, but our Varsity lost 3-1 in a best of 5 matches. It was good to get a look at them, though, because they were in our next tournament in Devine on August 18, 2023. We took second in our pool at Devine, losing only to Harper High School and defeating Ingleside and Fox Tech in our pool, putting us in the championship bracket for the second time. However, we faced a tough John Jay High School team with big, hard hitters and took our first loss in bracket play. We ended up in the final match of the consolation side of the championship bracket after beating Wagner High School in two sets only to be taken out by a tough Antonian Junior Varsity team.

Tonight, August 22, 2023, we take on Holy Cross at 5pm for Junior Varsity and 6pm for Varsity! I encourage everyone to come out and support the girls. We took Holy Cross to 5 sets last year before succumbing to their quick style of play and we are looking forward to beating them this year. Further, we will be playing in a tournament this week, August 24-26, 2023, from Thursday to Saturday, hosted by the Southwest Legacy High School Volleyball program.
