  • 4-26-2021 Lessons from the Rings - Regionals Edition

This last Friday, April 23rd, and Saturday, April 24th, the Regional qualifiers competed in the Region IV 3A Track and Field Meet. April Bodie and Noelia Medina were rained out from the Shot putt competition to be held on Friday. I will let you know how they did first since they would have been the first to compete. We competed on a beautiful Saturday morning. Each throwing competition was divided into two flights of 8 throwers. Each flight received three throws and if they were one of the top 8 distances, they threw for the finals to decide the medals. We had throwers in three of the four events and every thrower qualified for the final three throws. April’s second toss was her personal record (PR) for the year and qualified her for the finals. Her toss of 33’6” ended .5” from placing 6th. She leaves the Regional ring with one more year left as the Lady Pirate with the farthest throw in a Regional Meet and with the highest placing of any Lady Pirate shot putter. Noelia Medina completed her 6 years as a thrower for Lytle finishing 8th with a nice 33’3.5” toss. I have much more to say about Noelia in the lady's discus section. The baton has been handed to April and her sophomore classmates, Sarah Ytuarte and Bree Criswell.

  • 4-19-2021 Mason Davila - First Place Regional UIL Academic Meet

This weekend past weekend, April 17th, Mason Davila competed in the UIL Academic Number Sense Regional Competition at Davenport High School. He placed 1st out of 44 other contestants from our Region. This is the 2nd year in a row he has won the Number Sense contest and qualified for State. It would be 3 years if not for the pandemic. If you are not familiar with the Number Sense Contest, all students must solve the problems in their head. They are not allowed to write anything down except for the answer. Any incorrect answers, skipped questions, or stray erasure or pencil marks are counted wrong. They only have 10 minutes to complete the test. In 10 minutes, Mason answered 33 questions. He got 27 of them correct. That’s a little more than 18 seconds per question! Mason is not only a sharp math student. He excels in all of his classes, he is an outstanding young Varsity baseball player, a member of the Pirate Band, and a wonderful example of citizenship here at Lytle High School. Please congratulate him when you see him, and wish him well at the State Meet on May 1st.

  • 4-16-2021 What the judges had to say: STATE Results for 2021 UIL Young Filmmakers Contest

As I mentioned to you back in March, TWO of our documentary films made it to the TOP SIX in the state of Texas UIL Young Filmmakers Contest. While neither film placed in the top three, I am so proud that Lytle High School has made 5 returns to the State TOP SIX competition in the 8 years the contest has existed. I want to thank Mr. Robert Mumme for his insight and planning that got a large group of video students out to Fort Clark Springs Days in the week before the pandemic hit. Also, thanks to Mr. Andrew Oser who stepped in as UIL Coach/Advisor to make sure both of our film teams got the job done as he provided guidance, encouragement, and insight along the way.

The highlight of the day was a match up for the District 2nd place medal and a bid to the Regional Tournament. The 2nd place match was a battle between two Pirates, Zachary Bradshaw and Kyle Mueller and did they put on a great performance with one big shot after another and both boys playing their hearts out. In the end, Zachary pulled out the victory in a hard fought 3 set match 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, earning his spot for Regionals. Kyle will also attend Regionals as an alternate for his 3rd place finish.

  • 4-15-2021 Lessons from the Rings - Area Edition

We began the day with the ladies in the Discus ring. The Poth rings are opposite of Jourdanton’s rings. I can see every shot put throw and discus throw from one spot. Noelia Medina began her contest with her Personal Best throw of 108’4”. This throw gave her such joy. Alex was throwing coming in as the second-best thrower. She threw 94’ but she just seemed to be thinking too much about each step in the throw. When we rearranged the throwers, she was in sixth place. She threw a 100’10” throw which put her in Regional contention but then a Halletsville lady threw 103’. In Alex’s last throw she needed 105’ to advance, however, she came up short.
