9-22-2023 7th Grade Football vs Pearsall
Yesterday, September 21, 2023, the 7th Grade football team hosted the Pearsall Mavericks. The Mavericks started the game with an 11-minute drive for a touchdown. In Junior High games, that means that we first touched the ball with 3 minutes left in the half. It took us 12 seconds to score our first touchdown as Burl Jopling ran back the kickoff behind some great blocking. The rest of the game was a back-and-forth struggle. The intensity on the field was unique for a 7th grade contest. The game ended in a tie. Both schools respected each other. This was evident from the conversations I heard as they were shaking hands after the game. We are off this week. We’ll be hosting the Poteet Aggies on October 5, 2023.

9-22-2023 8th Grade Football vs Pearsall
A few mishaps by our secondary put us in a tough spot, but outstanding defensive play by Michael Scotello kept the game close. AJ Cantu and Angel De La Rosa shined like the North Star and put on a running display that would even make Walter Payton proud.

9-22-2023 Golf at Alamo City Series Golf Tournament
Yesterday, September 21, 2023, the boys golf team played in the Alamo City Series golf tournament at Willow Springs golf course in San Antonio. It was great to have a full team of Sophomore Daniel Herrera, Sophomore Thomas Rubal, Sophomore Lee Mills, Sophomore Isaac Bojorquez, and Junior Juaquin Castro. Many of the golfers were playing in their first golf tournament EVER. The big takeaway from yesterday is that they have “THE GOLF BUG”. Daniel Herrera scored a personal record with 104; Daniel was our sole golfer to return from last year’s team. Our next tournament will be November 15, 2023, at Brackenridge Golf Course in San Antonio. We are looking forward to a great season.

9-20-2023 Varsity Volleyball at Crystal City
The Lytle Lady Pirates traveled to the Crystal City Javelinas last night, September 19, 2023, for volleyball. It was the first district game of the season. While we ultimately went 0-3 for sets on the night, we kept it close and were able to see where the girls could use more work to be competitive with these former 4A teams. Our blocks are starting to come with an underclassman Middle front crew including Kylie Cantu, Frankie Scotello and Lilian Evans. Our upperclassman hitters, Calyssa Sevier and Amelia Martinez are swinging away with kills for us on the front row. Our rookie setter, Alyssa Sprenger, has played Libero for us the last two years but is starting to gain more confidence as she continues to lead our offense, setting for the first time in her volleyball career. Our backrow struggled a bit last night, but there is room for improvement and changes we can make to strengthen them.

9-18-2023 Vartsity Football at Natalia "Legacy Bowl"

9-15-2023 8th Grade Football Recap
After a straight butt kicking on September 7, 2023, the boys went to work during practice with a totally different mindset. They dedicated themselves to unselfish football and a team-first philosophy. On Thursday, September 14, 2023, our line blocked better than ever, and because of that, they allowed our backfield to showcase their talents, led by AJ Cantu, Angel De La Rosa, and Matthew Wimer.

9-15-2023 Junior High Cross Country FEAST Invitational and Bandera Invitational Recap
The Lytle Junior High Cross Country teams attended the Feast Invitational Meet on September 2, 2023, and the Bandera Invitational meet on September 9, 2023. The teams have shown excellent progression day in and day out. Whether it's learning the importance of getting out fast, pacing, placing, throwing on surges, attacking hills, or capitalizing on an opponent that has broken form. These kids have learned every aspect of this sport we call Cross Country. I highly encourage you to attend a Meet in the near future. You will not be disappointed.

9-15-2023 Junior Varsity Football vs Nataila Mustangs
Yesterday afternoon, September 14, 2023, the Junior Varsity Pirates took on the Natalia Mustangs and it was a smash-mouth football game from the very beginning. The Pirates took the opening kickoff to the house, which gave the Pirates an early 8-0 lead. Unfortunately, those would be the only points the Pirates would put on the scoreboard. Yesterday's football game was a good old defensive battle for both teams. Our defense played lights out and had the Mustangs struggling to move the ball all game. The Pirate offense struggled all game, moving the ball and giving up a pick 6 to the opponent. Although this game wasn't flashy with a lot of big plays, I believe these boys were taught a huge lesson about what it takes to "Dig Deep" when it gets tough. Thank you to all who came out to support the Junior Varsity Pirates. Also, thank you to all the staff for everything you do for these young men.

9-15-2023 7th Grade Football at Natalia
Yesterday, September 14, 2023, the Junior High Pirates travelled to Natalia for 7th Grade edition of the “The Legacy Bowl”. Get accustomed to hearing this, “It was the Burl Joplin show”. If any of you remember seeing Clayton Joplin play at Walter Joyce Field, you know what I’m talking about. The young man does amazing things on a football field. However, he’ll be the first to acknowledge how well his teammates did for him to be successful. The offensive line was led by Chevy Frias and Andrew Frausto and the defense was outstanding. Our puppies are becoming dogs. Christian Cantu, Elliot Mata, Brayden Robinette and Joseph Jimenez stood out in a great defensive effort. Special shout out to Ryan Hendrickson and James Thompson for stepping up at multiple positions after we had pregame circumstances beyond our control. When shaking hands, I heard comments like, “Be humble”, “Respect ‘em”, “Tell ‘em good game”. Our coaching staff couldn’t be prouder.

9-10-2023 Lytle Cross Country at Bandera Meet
On Saturday, September 9, 2023, the Lytle Pirate Cross Country team traveled to Bandera City Park for their 4th Meet of the year and the halfway point of our season. This group continues to amaze me and make me proud as 16 of the 17 medalled.

9-8-2023 Junior Varsity Football vs Pearsall Mavericks
If you weren't able to make it out to Walter H. Joyce stadium last night, September 7, 2023, then you missed out on an explosive performance by your Junior Varsity Pirates against the Pearsall Mavericks! Coming off a 22-6 victory last week against the Kennedy Rockets, the Junior Varsity Pirates were ready to keep their winning streak alive. Last night our Pirates' offense was firing on all cylinders and put 36 points on the scoreboard. The offensive touchdowns were scored by Jayden Motes with 2 touchdowns, Princeton Menchaca with 2 touchdowns, and Ethan Elizondo with 1 touchdown.

9-8-2023 7th Grade Football vs Navarro Panthers
Yesterday afternoon, September 7th, 2023, the 7th grade football team kicked off their season against the Navarro Panthers. We, coaches, usually get to see our young football players grow up throughout the season. It is always satisfying in Week 10 to remember how young and naïve they were at the first game. Well, we got a season’s worth in 1 game. In the first half, this team had a “deer in the headlights” look about them. In the second half, they looked like bona fide football players. It’s a great group of boys and we are looking forward to the rest of the season. Yesterday’s game was in a scrimmage format.

9-8-20203 Junior High Volleyball at Crystal City
On September 7, 2023 the Lady Pirates Junior High volleyball team traveled the long road to Crystal City. A special thank you and shout out to Armando Esquibel for providing us with an air-conditioned bus; once again, we found ourselves in another gym without air conditioning. Crystal City was very apologetic, they, like many, were dealing with hot temperatures and ACs were working overtime.

9-7-2023 Junior High Volleybal at Natalia
On August 31, 2023, the Lady Pirates Junior High Volleyball team traveled the short distance to our favorite rivals in Natalia. The ladies were so excited coming off their performance of last week and were ready to play. Although they walked into a hot gym, again, this did not detour the girls; they even seemed more determined than ever to compete.
